Calsa helps adults keep a food diary, see calories and nutrients, and follow a goal they set. It is a general wellness tool. This notice explains its limits and how it responds when someone may be struggling with food or weight. It is part of our Terms of Use.
Not medical advice
Calsa is not a medical device. It does not diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease, and nothing in the app, the AI chat, our emails or this website is medical advice.
Calsa is not a doctor, dietitian or nutritionist, and the AI chat is not one either. The chat answers questions about food and your diary. When you ask about symptoms, a diagnosis, medicines or doses, GLP-1 medicines, diabetes or blood sugar, kidney disease, pregnancy, surgery or supplements, it tells you that this is a question for your doctor or pharmacist, and it will only talk about food in general terms.
Calsa is for people aged 18 and over.
Talk to your doctor first if
- you are pregnant or breastfeeding;
- you have a health condition, including diabetes, kidney disease or a heart condition, or you take medicine that affects appetite or weight;
- food, eating or weight have been a struggle for you, now or in the past.
You can still use Calsa to keep a diary without a calorie goal. You can choose “track without a goal” at any time.
Numbers are estimates
Calorie and nutrient values come from food databases, from product labels and from what you enter. When you log by photo or voice, AI suggests the foods and the grams, and you confirm or correct them before anything is saved. Real portions, recipes and labels vary, so every number in Calsa is an estimate. Energy you burn, read from Apple Health or Health Connect, is an estimate made by your phone or watch.
Please don’t rely on Calsa where an exact number matters for your health, for example when dosing insulin or managing a food allergy. Calsa can warn you about an ingredient you have marked “Don’t eat”, but labels and recipes change, so always check the package.
How goals are kept safe
Calsa sets limits that you can’t switch off:
- A daily calorie goal never goes below a safe floor. If the pace you pick would take it lower, the goal stays at the floor and Calsa tells you why.
- The weight-loss pace is limited to about 1% of body weight a week.
- A weight-loss goal can’t be set below the weight that matches a BMI of 18.5 for your height. If your current BMI is already below 18.5, Calsa does not offer a weight-loss goal.
- Days below the floor are never praised or marked as a success.
- The AI chat will not agree with fasting, skipping meals to “make up” for food, or a goal below the floor, and it cannot change your goal for you.
If food or tracking feels hard
Calorie counting is not right for everyone. For some people it can feed an unhealthy focus on food or weight. Calsa watches for a small number of signs that tracking may be causing harm, and responds in a calm, simple way.
What Calsa looks for
- several days in a week logged well below the safe floor;
- weighing yourself many times a day on several days in a week;
- repeated attempts to set a goal, goal weight or pace below Calsa’s limits;
- weight falling faster than is safe for four weeks in a row, or falling below the lowest goal weight Calsa sets;
- words in the AI chat or in a food entry that suggest a crisis, self-harm or an eating disorder.
These signs are worked out automatically on our servers. Staff do not review your diary to find them. Signs based on numbers are not linked to your name in any report our team sees. A phrase that suggests a crisis or an eating disorder creates a private case so that our safety team can check that the response worked. That case holds the message, not your diary.
What Calsa does
- In the AI chat, every message that suggests a crisis or an eating disorder gets a response written in advance by people, not by AI. It lists a crisis line and an eating disorder helpline for your country, with the emergency number. It contains no numbers about your body or food, no prices and no ads, and the message doesn’t count toward your chat limit.
- In the app, when another sign appears, you see one calm card: “If eating enough has been hard lately, or tracking feels stressful, support is here.” It shows the helplines for your country. You’ll see it at most once every 14 days.
- Next to the card, you can pause tracking with one tap. Your history is kept. If you weigh yourself very often, you can also hide your weight.
- While a sign is active, which lasts 28 days after the last one, Calsa hides weight forecasts, does not suggest lowering your goal, and shows no prices or ads on the day the card appears.
- “Get support” is always in the menu, and “Get help now” is always first in the chat menu, whether or not you subscribe.
What Calsa doesn’t do
- Calsa never contacts emergency services, your family or anyone else on your behalf.
- Calsa doesn’t show weight, calories, BMI, body images or scales in a support response.
- Calsa doesn’t diagnose an eating disorder or tell anyone that you have one.
- Calsa doesn’t try to keep you tracking. Taking a break is always fine.
From 2027, we will publish here the number of support responses the AI chat gave in the previous calendar year. The figure is a count only, with no information about any person.
