MyFitnessPal Premium: What the Upgrade Adds

The paid plan adds barcode scanning, Meal Scan, voice logging, goals by meal or day, data export and no ads. It was $79.99 a year on the US App Store, about $6.67 a month.

Key takeaways

  • The paid plan adds barcode scanning, Meal Scan, voice logging, goals by gram, meal and day, data export and no ads.
  • On the US App Store, "Annual Premium" was $79.99, about $6.67 a month, and "Monthly Premium" was $19.99, or $239.88 over 12 months.
  • The top tier adds a meal planner with 1,500+ recipes and grocery lists; its US price was $99.99 a year in April 2025.
  • Promo codes redeem on the website only, cannot go on top of an active subscription, and some expire.
  • The AI assistant is for paid members on iOS, in English, and it cannot log food for you.

MyFitnessPal Premium adds faster logging (barcode scan, Meal Scan and voice), finer goals by gram, meal and day, data export, and no ads. On the US App Store, “MyFitnessPal Annual Premium” was $79.99, which works out to about $6.67 a month. The monthly plan is $19.99, and Premium+ costs more again. Below I go through what each step up buys.

What does MyFitnessPal Premium add?

Four groups of features, all listed on the company’s Premium features page. I read it line by line and sorted it by what it changes in a day of logging.

Group What Premium adds
Faster logging Barcode scanner, Meal Scan from a phone camera, voice logging, adding an item to several days at once, macros on Quick Add
More control Macro goals by gram, calorie goals by meal, different goals for each day of the week, exercise calories kept out of your goal, net carbs, a fasting timer
Deeper insight Macros by meal, food analysis, meal timestamps, unlimited weekly digests, a choice of nutrient dashboards, data export
Smoother use No ads, priority support, recipe discovery, workout routines

Some items have limits. Meal Scan runs on iOS and Android for English users. Net carbs are for iOS and Android in the US and Canada, and recipe discovery for US English users on the same two platforms. There is also an AI assistant. The Coach is for Premium and Premium+ members on iOS, in English. The help center lists six countries: the US, UK, Ireland, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. It answers from your diary, goals, saved meals and step data. It can’t add food to your diary.

Goals by day need an example. Set 2,000 kcal on five weekdays and 2,400 kcal on two training days, and the week allows 14,800 kcal. A flat 2,000 kcal goal gives 14,000 kcal and can’t separate the days.

Mark the rows you would touch every week. With fewer than two marked, the upgrade has little to offer you.

What does Premium+ add beyond Premium?

A meal planner. The Premium+ article describes weekly plans built from 1,500+ recipes, logging straight from the plan, budget and time settings, and grocery lists with sharing. It includes everything in Premium and is sold in the US, UK, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand and Australia.

Prices for Premium+ vary by country. The company’s membership guide, published in April 2025, lists them as of that date:

Country Premium+ per year Premium+ per month
US 99.99 USD 24.99 USD
UK 79.99 GBP 19.99 GBP
Canada 144.99 CAD 36.99 CAD
Australia 159.99 AUD 39.99 AUD

The Premium+ sign-up steps show a “7-day Free Trial” button. On iOS, moving up from standard Premium means Apple refunds the prorated difference, and then you pay the Premium+ price.

If you already plan meals somewhere else, Premium+ adds little for you.

How much does MyFitnessPal Premium cost?

In the US, $79.99 a year or $19.99 a month. That is what the App Store listing showed for “Annual Premium” and “Monthly Premium”. The membership guide agrees.

Twelve monthly payments come to $239.88, so the annual plan costs about a third as much and saves $159.89.

The annual price wins only if you stay past four months, because four monthly payments come to $79.96, a few cents under it.

Other storefronts, checked the same day, list more than one price under a similar name. The listings show names and prices but no billing periods, so I give the range for purchases with “Yearly” or “Annual” in the name.

Storefront Yearly or annual purchases Monthly purchases
UK £39.99 to £64.99 £7.99 and £15.99
Canada $69.99 to $114.99 $13.99 and $27.99
Australia $79.99 to $129.99 $14.99 and $29.99

I can’t tell you from the listing why a name carries two prices. Open the purchase screen in the app and read the period before you tap. UK readers weighing a local app can start with the Nutracheck reviews, which cover its cost, free version and UK food data. For another US app with its prices set side by side, there’s MyNetDiary vs MyFitnessPal.

Is there a MyFitnessPal discount code?

The company documents codes, but I found no public one. Its help article on promotional codes says to redeem them on the website, not in the app. Premium then follows you to your phone. The article names three limits: no stacking on an active subscription, offers can expire, and no gifting.

A free trial is offered on occasion, per the membership guide, and the length varies by account. Coupon sites list codes, but they aren’t the company’s pages and I didn’t open them as sources.

That leaves the annual plan as the one standing discount. The arithmetic above gives about two thirds off the monthly price.

If you hold a code and already pay for Premium, cancel the renewal first and redeem the code when the paid period ends.

Is Premium worth paying for, and what does Calsa do instead?

It’s worth it if you’ll use a paid feature several times a week. Scanning packages, logging by voice or photo, goals that change by day and exporting your diary are the clearest candidates. For a plain search-and-type routine, the basic version covers it, and so does an app that is free to use with a scanner and voice logging, which the MyNetDiary review describes.

Calsa puts barcode scanning, photo logging, speech-to-text entry and a full data export in every plan, so the first three rows of that table don’t need an upgrade there. The AI chat sees your diary and takes its numbers from the food database. One subscription covers web, iPhone and Android. The best calorie counter app checks work on any app, including this one.

The next table compares 15 calorie trackers sold in the US, UK, Canada and Australia, checked against their websites, help centers and App Store pages. I didn’t open any paid screens.

In the category (of 15 apps, checked 8 Oct 2026) Calsa
AI chat 0 of 15 combine a chat without a persona, numbers from a database and memory you can delete fact by fact; all 6 chats in the set use a coach title or a persona labelled AI with no persona; numbers from the database; memory you can see and delete one fact at a time
Price 0 of 15 show the price before the first question; 7 of 15 use timers, discount wheels or a second offer price, trial and how to cancel before any question; no timers

Where Calsa is weaker: every plan is paid after the trial. It has no manual workout logging, no Apple Watch app or widget, no meal plans or fasting, and a smaller food database.

Choose something else if you would rather not pay at all, want a watch app or log workouts by hand. For weekly meal plans, MyFitnessPal’s Premium+ is the tool in this comparison.

Questions and answers

How much does MyFitnessPal cost?

The basic app costs nothing. On the US App Store, "MyFitnessPal Annual Premium" was $79.99 and "MyFitnessPal Monthly Premium" was $19.99. Other countries list different prices, and the top tier costs more.

Is there a MyFitnessPal discount code?

The company documents promotional codes, but I found no public one on its pages. Codes are redeemed on the website, not in the app, and cannot be added to an active subscription. The annual plan is the standing discount, about two thirds off twelve monthly payments in the US.

What is the difference between MyFitnessPal Premium and Premium+?

Premium+ includes everything in Premium and adds a meal planner, meal prep mode, diet preferences and grocery lists. It is sold in the US, UK, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand and Australia. Premium+ cost 99.99 USD a year in the US in April 2025.

Does MyFitnessPal Premium include the AI Coach?

Yes, on iOS. The help center says Coach is available to Premium and Premium+ members in English in six countries. It answers from your diary and goals, and it cannot log food or change your goals.

What happens to my data if I stop paying for MyFitnessPal Premium?

Premium stays active until the end of the period you paid for. The company says a downgrade to the free plan takes effect at the end of the billing period. Export your diary before then, because data export is a paid feature.
