Choosing a calorie app

Simple App Weight Loss Review: Fasting Tracker or Calorie Log

The app's free version allows two AI coach replies and one food scan a day, and its help center keeps streaks, the Success Score and workout plans for Premium. Its store text promises no calorie counting.

Key takeaways

  • In the free version the AI coach gives up to 2 replies a day and the food camera works once a day.
  • Streak tracking, the Success Score and workout plans are Premium features according to the help center.
  • The App Store rows read Premium $29.99 and $59.99 in the US, and no row names its billing period.
  • The store text promises weight loss without calorie counting, and typed-in macros are not interpreted.
  • Cancel at least 24 hours before renewal, because deleting the app does not cancel the subscription.

Simple pairs a fasting tracker with a food log and an AI coach. The free version gives you two coach replies and one food scan a day. The help center keeps streaks, the Success Score and workout plans for Premium. For this Simple app weight loss review I read its help pages and all four of its App Store listings, from the US to Australia.

What does this Simple app weight loss review cover?

This is reading, not testing. I never opened the paid screens, so I can’t say whether Simple works for anyone.

Simple’s Track tab holds a fasting tracker, a food tracker with a nutrition breakdown per meal, hydration, steps, weight and a symptom log. A separate tab holds Avo, the AI health coach. The US listing adds a mascot called Blinky and a Success Score, and shows an age rating of 18+. The store text promises weight loss without calorie counting, so I read everything below with that promise next to a calorie log.

What is free in Simple, and what needs Premium?

The free version lets you log fasts, meals, water, weight and activity. You get up to two Avo replies and one food scan a day, per the plans page. To use it, you download the app and close the paywall when it appears.

Feature Free version Premium
Logging fasts, meals, hydration, weight, activity Yes Yes
Avo coach replies Up to 2 a day Unlimited
Avo Vision food camera Once a day Unlimited
Personalized insights No Yes
Success Score and Blinky No Yes
Streak tracking and daily check-ins No Yes
Workout plans No Yes
Educational library Limited Full

Two pages word one detail differently. The plans page says the free version has no detailed breakdown and macros for a logged meal. The overview page says free users get no personalized feedback on meals or weight. If macros per meal matter to you, log one day on the free version and see what the Track tab shows before you pay.

How much does Simple cost?

No page gives a single price. The FAQ lists monthly, quarterly, 9-month and yearly plans, plus commitment plans of 3, 6 or 10 months. Exact prices appear on the paywall.

Each App Store storefront shows ten purchase rows. Nearly all are named “Simple Pro” or “Simple Premium”, and every one has a price and no period. This is what I saw.

Storefront “Simple Premium” rows “Simple Pro” rows, lowest to highest
United States $29.99 and $59.99 $14.99 to $49.99
United Kingdom £29.99 and £59.99 £14.49 to £48.99
Canada $39.99 and $79.99 $19.99 to $66.99
Australia $49.99 and $99.99 $23.99 to $81.99

The higher Premium row is about double the lower. No page I read says how Pro differs from Premium or which period each row covers. The FAQ says it occasionally offers introductory periods at a reduced price and shows trial details at signup. At the paywall, look for two things: the period and the total. On the US and Canadian pages one row is a “Workbooks Bundle”, which the FAQ calls optional.

Two FAQ limits matter here. You can’t update payment details in the app, so you cancel and subscribe again. You can’t switch plan length on an active subscription either, so the same cancel-and-resubscribe rule applies. Refunds on App Store and Google Play purchases go through Apple or Google. Website purchases are considered case by case. If you’re coming from a points-based program, Weight Watchers app alternative covers the fee, cancellation and data checks to make first.

Does Simple count calories?

Calories are a side job. The help page on logging tells you to type specific foods with portion sizes, such as 150 g of chicken breast. If you skip the portion, the app uses an estimate. It also says to avoid typing grams of protein, carbs or calories, because the tracker doesn’t interpret them.

Photos work too. Avo Vision turns the picture into written text, and you check or edit the entry before you tap Log Now. After you log a meal, the app rates each food on fiber, protein, fat and calorie density. That rating feeds the Success Score, which is what the Home tab opens on. I’d watch my own weigh-in trend ahead of that score, and weight loss tracker app shows how to read one.

Food and fasts are linked. Editing the time of a meal that starts or ends a fast changes that fast. Deleting a meal that ends a fast extends the fast until the next meal you record. So fix a wrong entry by editing it.

I’d run one test on any logger, Simple included. Log the same lunch twice, once with grams and once without, then compare the two entries. If the app can’t show why they differ, you are reading a guess. The fatsecret app review covers a plain calorie log to try the same test on, and how to choose a calorie counter app has more tests like it.

How do you cancel Simple, and can you export your data?

Cancel where you paid. The cancel page lists three paths: the website (profile, Manage subscription, Turn off auto-renewal), the App Store (Settings, your name, Subscriptions) and Google Play. Cancel at least 24 hours before renewal, and don’t count on deleting the app to do it. Access continues to the end of the paid period. If you can’t remember where you paid, support will find the subscription and cancel it for you.

I found no data export in the help articles I read. The page on deleting your account says deletion is permanent and removes your data except what the law requires the company to keep. I found nothing that promises a copy of your history. If you want one, ask support before you delete. For prices, logging and exports of the two apps in one place, there is Simple vs Calsa.

The US listing also declares purchases, location, contact info, identifiers and usage data under “Data Used to Track You”. Apple hasn’t verified it, so I read no more into it than the words.

Where does Calsa differ from Simple, and who should pick Simple?

Everything above about Simple comes from its help center and App Store pages, and I never opened its paid screens. I write for the Calsa blog, so check my table against those pages.

Simple Calsa
Main job A fasting timer, a food log and an AI coach A food diary: type, say, photograph or scan what you ate
Calories Store text promises no calorie counting; typed-in macros are not interpreted Quick add takes just the calories, and every entry shows its math, “per 100 g × grams”
Photo logging Once a day without Premium, unlimited with it In every plan: names the foods, suggests grams, and you confirm the portion
Motivation Blinky, the Success Score and streaks No streaks, badges or mascot; notes in plain words such as “in range”
AI A named coach, Avo AI chat labelled as AI, with no persona
Data export None found in the help articles Export everything, on any plan
Tracking Declares five data types used for tracking No ad networks, tracking SDKs or pixels

Where Calsa is weaker: you pay from the start, with no plan at no cost to fall back on. It has no fasting tracker, no manual workout entry, no Apple Watch app or widget, and a smaller food database than the biggest apps.

Choose something else if you want a fasting timer, workout plans, a watch app or a mascot cheering you on.

Under every entry Calsa shows its source and the “per 100 g × grams” math.

Questions and answers

Is the Simple app free?

Partly. The free version lets you log fasts, meals, water, weight and activity, with up to two coach replies and one food scan a day. Personalized insights, streaks, the Success Score and workout plans need Premium, per the help center.

Does the Simple app count calories?

Calories are a side job. The store text promises weight loss without calorie counting, and the help center says to type foods with portions. Typed-in grams of protein, carbs or calories are not interpreted by the tracker.

How much does Simple Premium cost?

The US App Store listed Simple Premium rows at $29.99 and $59.99, without naming the period. The help center says exact prices show on the paywall, so check the period and the total there.

How do I cancel the Simple app?

Cancel where you paid: the website, the App Store or Google Play. Do it at least 24 hours before renewal. Deleting the app does not cancel, and you keep access until the paid period ends. Support will cancel for you if you are unsure where you paid.

Can I export my data from the Simple app?

I found no export in the help articles I read. The account deletion page says deletion is permanent and removes your data except what the law requires the company to keep. If you want a copy of your history, ask support before you delete.
