Choosing a calorie app

Weight Watchers App Alternative: Points or Calories

Before leaving a Points-based app for a calorie counter, check three things: the monthly fee, how cancelling works and how to get your data. The website shows $24.00 a month after a 30-day trial.

Key takeaways

  • The website says a 30-day trial turns into the standard monthly fee, currently $24.00, unless you cancel before it ends.
  • Points are scored from several nutrients, and the pages I read give the direction of the formula but not the formula.
  • One banana (115 g) is 88 × 1.15 = 101 kcal, a figure you can recompute from a public record.
  • A standard one-month plan ends at the end of the membership month in which you cancel.
  • I found no self-serve data export, only a privacy request by email or phone for a portable copy.

If you want a Weight Watchers app alternative that counts calories, check three things first. They are the monthly cost, how cancelling works and how you get your data out. The website shows $24.00 a month after a 30-day trial. I found no self-serve export. I read its pages and four App Store listings.

What does the WeightWatchers app track?

The app tracks food, activity, water, sleep and weight and adds a coach chat, per the trial page. Its center is the Points Program. You get a daily Points Budget, and each food gets a Points value. The Points page says higher sugar and saturated fat raise a food’s Points, while protein and fiber lower them. It names 350+ ZeroPoint foods that cost nothing against the budget.

You log by photo, barcode or search. The US listing calls Points a calorie counter alternative.

How are Points different from counting calories?

A Points value is a score built from several nutrients, and WeightWatchers sets the formula. A calorie value is an amount of energy you can check against a food database. The pages I read say which nutrients push a value up or down, and none prints the formula, so you can’t recompute a Points value.

Calories can be rechecked. The USDA record for ripe bananas lists 88 kcal per 100 g and gives one peeled banana as 115 g. That is 88 × 1.15 = 101 kcal, and the same arithmetic works for any food whose grams you know.

Points fold the choices into one daily budget, which works if you would rather not do arithmetic. Calories take more effort. In return you can recompute any figure yourself, as the banana shows. Expect an awkward first week after you switch, when 101 kcal on the screen means less to you than the Points number you knew. If the pull is a meal plan rather than a budget, Fitia app alternative compares plans with a plain food log. If neither a budget nor a calorie sum appeals, fasting is a third route, and the Simple app weight loss review reads one app built around it.

What does the WeightWatchers app cost?

On the website, a 30-day trial turns into the standard monthly fee, currently $24.00, unless you cancel before midnight Eastern time on day 30. That comes from the trial page.

Another page advertises “Starting at $12/month” with a 12-month commitment that auto-renews for another 12 months. A year on the monthly fee costs 12 × $24.00 = $288.00. On the commitment plan at $12 it is $144, if “starting at” is what you pay. I couldn’t confirm that. Core+ is a higher tier, and its page lists 3,000 weekly Workshops. I found no price for it.

The App Store shows something messier. Each storefront lists ten purchase rows, and I read them.

Storefront Rows named “Plan” or “Monthly” Other rows
United States “Monthly Plan” $19.99 to $24.99, nine rows “WW Digital 6-month” $108.99
United Kingdom “1-Month Plan” £49.99; “12-Month Plan” £199.99 and £299.99 Rows named in other languages, £49.99 to £229.99
Canada “Monthly Plan” $22.99 to $28.99; “1-Month Plan” $69.99 “Unlimited Workshops + Digital” $37.99; “6 Months Plan with 14 Day FT” $134.99
Australia “Monthly Plan” $34.99 to $44.99; “12-Month Plan” $499.99 “Unlimited Workshops + Digital” $35.99

In the US the monthly rows sit close to the website’s $24.00. Elsewhere the gap is wide. A one-month row costs £49.99 in the UK and $69.99 in Canada. I can’t explain the spread. The listing never says which row is which tier, and two Canadian rows are named “Not supported/Not for sale”. Before you buy through the store, open the paywall in your own account and read the period and the total. How to choose a calorie counter app lists the rest of the checks. Weighing Noom too? Noom vs Weight Watchers sets the two programs side by side.

How do you cancel WeightWatchers, and can you take your data?

The cancellation page points to an online page for cancelling or switching your membership, and to a 24/7 chat. When the cancellation takes effect depends on the plan. A standard one-month plan ends with the membership month in which you cancel, and a multi-month commitment plan ends with the commitment period. For the trial, cancel online or by phone at 800-651-6000 before the 30th day ends. Put the date in your calendar the day you start, because the trial ends at midnight Eastern time on day 30.

I found no self-serve export button. The privacy policy lists a right, subject to applicable law, to a portable copy of your personal information. You request it by email or phone. Ask first. My order would be: request the copy, note which plan type you hold, cancel, then keep the confirmation. WeightWatchers vs Calsa sets those export and cancel steps beside Calsa’s, row by row.

The US listing also declares contact info, identifiers and usage data under “Data Used to Track You”. Apple lists it as unverified.

Is Calsa a Weight Watchers app alternative worth testing?

Facts about WeightWatchers come from its website and App Store pages. I read them, and nobody walked through the paid screens. I work for Calsa, so check each WeightWatchers cell against its pages.

WeightWatchers Calsa
What you track against A daily Points Budget A calorie goal and macros, with kcal and grams on every entry
Where a number comes from Formula not published on the pages I read Each entry shows its source and the math, “per 100 g × grams”; unconfirmed amounts are marked “estimate”
Logging Photo, barcode, recipe and restaurant search Type or say it, photo, barcode, label photo; restaurant chains with the chain’s own numbers
Human support Coach chat, Workshops, a member network AI chat labelled as AI; a person replies to email within 24 hours; no social feed
Data export Request by email or phone Export everything, on any plan
Tracking Declares three data types used for tracking No ad networks, tracking SDKs or pixels
Breaks A Vacation Mode, per the store text No streaks or badges; a break costs nothing

Where Calsa is weaker: every plan is paid, and there are no Workshops, no coaches and no community. It has no Points, no meal plans, no manual workout entry and no Apple Watch app. Fewer foods sit in its database than in the largest apps.

Choose something else if you want live coaching, group meetings, a members’ network or the Points system itself.

Log a normal week in Calsa, where each entry shows its source and the “per 100 g × grams” math, before you cancel anything.

Questions and answers

How much does WeightWatchers cost per month?

The US website says the standard monthly fee after the 30-day trial is currently $24.00. It also advertises a price starting at $12 a month with a 12-month commitment. The App Store rows I read ranged much wider outside the US, so read the paywall before you pay.

How do Points differ from calories?

A Points value is a score that rises with sugar and saturated fat and falls with protein and fiber, per WeightWatchers. Calories measure energy and can be rechecked against a food database. The pages I read do not publish the Points formula.

When does WeightWatchers cancellation take effect?

For a standard one-month plan, at the end of the membership month in which you cancel. For a multi-month commitment plan, at the end of the commitment period. For the free trial, cancel before midnight Eastern time on the 30th day.

Can I export my WeightWatchers food diary?

I found no self-serve export. The privacy policy gives you a right to a copy of your personal information in a portable format, requested by email to [email protected] or by phone at 1-800-651-6000.
